Christmas is over and the New Year has begun. This means another opportunity for you to be creative and effectively market to your client base and prospects.  As we all know, marketing is a vital part of any business, and yes, even a massage practice.  Most massage therapists would rather have their teeth pulled without novacaine than work on marketing their business.  As someone who has been practicing for 15 years, I can attest that ongoing marketing is what has helped me build a successful practice. My recommendation to you is to make marketing fun and keep it simple.

Posted are the covers of  Christmas Cards I started sending to my clients over the years (pictures are of me) and they have thoroughly enjoyed them. I get emails and phone calls from them saying they can’t wait to see what picture I’m going to put on my card each year. I even walked into a client’s office and she had my card displayed with her family photos; she said it made her smile throughout the year. There is some preparation and a strategic system I use to rotate the cards out every year, so if you are interested in doing something similar for your clients contact me and I will walk you through the process.

With any marketing campaign there is some planning that needs to take place. When I’m coaching a therapist we  sit down and discuss their business goals and based on what is determined during our meeting, a marketing plan is created which will help them achieve their objectives. Based on where someone is with their practice there are various marketing efforts which need to be focused on.  If someone is a new massage therapist their main objective is to develop a clientele, so their marketing will be somewhat different from someone who has been practicing for a while and already has a client base.

The new therapist is announcing to the world that they exist and are open for business so they might start with grand-opening announcements via email, snail mail and online social networking. Someone who has been practicing for a while  needs to show their clients how important they are so they may send cards throughout the year for various occasions, send newsletters, appointment reminders, thinking of you cards, blog or tweet wellness tips and various other marketing tools which I will  address in one of my next blogs.

For right now I want you to start thinking about what fun, out-of-the-box, creative things you will do this year to market your massage practice and set yourself apart from other therapists out there. Remember, make sure your clients know you are there all year-long because if you don’t, someone else will.

There is something to be said about being in motion and moving forward; it eventually gets you where you want to be. I had a client come in yesterday who works with special needs children. During the summer they take them to the movies, bowling and roller skating. She shared with me that one of her kids is totally blind and they took him roller skating. Of course I was intrigued with this and asked how in the world he got around the ring without bumping into walls and other people. She said he constantly bumps into walls, people and even falls down but he gets up laughs and keeps on moving because he is having the time of his life and doing what he loves. I thought WOW we can all learn something from this young man. 

As a massage therapist you will run into obstacles with your business, and yes you will fall down. Whether you are in the start-up phase, a veteran therapist  or feeling intimidated with marketing your services remember there is reward and satisfaction in moving forward with your daily task of building your dream practice. Sometimes you will feel like you are blind,lost and don’t know what to do next with building or maintaining your clientele. Seek help from someone who is where you would like to be or take additional marketing and business classes, because we all know these topics were only skimmed over in massage school. Better yet hire yourself a business coach. Whatever you decide to do just move forward everyday with building your practice and I promise you that one day you will look up and your path will be clear and you will be able to see SUCCESS!

Well I have been blessed with another birthday today, 45 years young, so I thought going into my new birth year would be the perfect time for my first blog…..so welcome! My name is Lisa Randolph and I have been fortunate enough to have 13 of my 45 years be in the career of massage therapy. I am extremely passionate about the profession of Massage and truly feel that it is one of the main stay careers of the future. With that said I am also passionate about seeing massage therapists stick around beyond the 2 year mark, which is why I have created this blog. I teach continuing education classes which focus on business related issues and I also provide business coaching for massage therapists and small business owners.

I want this to be a space for massage therapists to come and share their business successes and learn from each other. My main postings will cover business development topics such as marketing, how to find clients and how to hold on to your clients once you have them. I will also post on subjects such as how to effectivley set goals and strategies to make your business a success.
